Culture Compass

Navigating newcomers for cultural integration through digital learning

Module 3.4

Why cultural awareness matters

Cultural awareness reduces misunderstandings, improves relationships, and makes you feel more at home.

Examples:

  • In many countries, small talk is common when buying items, in other places silence is preferred.
  • Direct vs. indirect communication styles can change how requests are perceived.
  • Personal space varies between cultures — standing close may feel friendly in some places, but uncomfortable in others.
  • Eye contact can have different meanings — it may show confidence and honesty in one culture, but be seen as disrespectful in another.
  • Concepts of time differ – arriving a few minutes late may be normal in some cultures, while punctuality is expected in others.
  • Gestures and hand signals can mean different things – a common gesture in one country may be confusing or even offensive elsewhere.
